Astrodome
Spent most of the day yesterday assisting the American Red Cross with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. This photo was taken at the Astrodome in the wee hours of the morning. It wasn't a time for picture taking inside the dome, but I did manage to snap about ten shots with my little Sony Cybershot point and shoot.

NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 30, 2005) - Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Shawn Beaty, 29, of Long Island, N.Y., looks for survivors in the wake of Hurricane Katrina here today. Beaty is a member of an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew sent from Clearwater, Fla., to assist in search and rescue efforts. U.S. Coast Guard photograph by Petty Officer 2nd Class NyxoLyno Cangemi... Please note, folks: I didn't take this pic; I'm in the Coast Guard, but I'm not the Petty Officer Cangemi. This photo is in the public domain; you can find it and more CG photos at www.uscgstormwatch.com.

Rues inondées
This photo was part of the morning brief the Commandant of the Coast Guard received 31 August 2005. Photo shows Katrina survivors underway in a pleasure craft with interstate ramps covered in water. Water height is nearly to traffic signals!

Please note: while this photo was used in a brief to the Commandant, there's an excellent chance the junior officer who built the brief took it off the wire. I didn't take it. It's likely copyrighted. I post it here under "fair use" and as a public service, letting you -- the public -- know about the dire situation in New Orleans. (déclarée CC)

there are lists of missing people all over the shelters around baton rouge. this was a new list at the southern university activity center. it's not uncommon to start talking with someone and find out that they are missing someone.

She said:
My husband and I drove from south Georgia to the beach in Florida to celebrate my birthday (Sept. 1). We made a toilet stop in Tallahassee at a truck stop. We saw about a dozen Asplund trucks stopped getting gasoline. These folks take down trees. We also saw two large truckloads of commercial-grade generators. I'm sure all these folks were heading toward the devastated areas from Hurricane Katrina. I saw a message scrawled on the door in the women's restroom--left from people who left Mississippi before the hurricane hit.

"Is this what the pioneers of the civil rights movement fought to achieve, a society where many black people are as trapped and isolated by their poverty as they were by segregation laws?"

"If Sept. 11 showed the power of a nation united in response to a devastating attack, Hurricane Katrina reveals the fault lines of a region and a nation, rent by profound social divisions."
